2.1 Favorite Website Communication Challenge, by Samantha Johnson, Fall 2014

Part A: Design

Part B: Documentation

What did you find compelling about this website?

At first I never liked Facebook.  I was more of a Myspace person, but then Myspace changed to be more like Facebook and it went downhill from there.  I’m now finding that the Facebook is reverting back to how Myspace was in little ways, such as more personalized profiles and status update options (i.e. how you’re feeling, what you’re doing, etc).

How does using this website make you feel? Why?

Honestly I use Facebook to keep in touch with family members and close friends only, but I find it helpful to use with classmates occasionally through groups and messaging.  The website makes me feel connected to people I can’t see too often and serves as a last resort communication device for me.  I hate the fact that Facebook has huge advertisements on the right-hand part of the screen.  It’s really distracting and annoying.

How did you decide which elements of the website to re-create?

I completely took out aspects of the site that I either never use, or am annoyed by.  All those options on the menu side of the screen bother me sometimes because I feel like they’re redundant and make things complicated.  So I only included elements that I use often, like the “friends” page, “messages,” “notifications,” and “your profile,” options, along with “groups,” and I added “photos and videos.”  To me as a visual communications major, it’s much more important to me to be able to click on an option for media and pages rather than say a chat window or a “find friends” button.

How effective was your photo editing at improving the signal to noise ratio?

I think it was effective enough for the purpose of the assignment.  I actually feel as if I had to add things to the page, since I decided to take out most of the original page and re-design it.

What are you happy with about your edited website design?

I do think I created a more prioritized and less cluttered web page that’s more simple and user-friendly.

What would you have done differently if you had more time/skills?

I think if I had more time and energy to really delve into the project I could come up with better options as far as the status updates are concerned.  I feel like I could have been more creative with the setup of the statuses beyond horizontal orientation.
